How to Show an Employer You Have Added Value at Work
How to Show an Employer You Have Added Value at WorkHow to Show an Employer You Have Added Value at WorkOne of the most important things you can do during a job search is show the hiring manager what you can bring to the company. Employers look for candidates who will add value to their organization, and one of the hiring managers goals is to make sure the people they hire are top performers who will succeed in the position. You can make it easier for them by showing youre very well qualified for the job. Your resume, cover letter, and other job materials can demonstrate how you have added value in your previous positions. If youre selected for an interview, share examples of your accomplishments to demonstrate how you would be the perfect pick for the role. Tip By clearly showing the ways you succeeded in previous positions, you will help employers landsee why you would be a valuable employee. How to Show a Prospective Employer Your Value Define success in your previous position s. Before even writing about job performance, think about how success was measured in your prior roles. If you worked in sales, success might have been measured by the number of clients you had. If you were a teacher, your success could have been measured in part by your students grades and test scores. Make sure you know what success looked like in each position youve held. Make a list of ways you have achieved success. Once you have defined success in your previous jobs, make a list of times you went above and beyond to deliver it. For example, you might note a month when you acquired a number of new clients, or a time when your students test scores improved significantly over the course of the year. Quantify that success. Once you have a list of accomplishments and achievements, think of ways to quantify that success. Numbers help hiring managers see precisely how youve added value to a company. These numbers do not have to relate to profitability. Instead, they might refer to ti me saved, costs reduced, or processes improved. For example, if you are an administrative assistant, you might explain that you transitioned your sekretariat to an e-file ordnungsprinzip that saved the company about $1,000 per year in paper goods. Make a list of awards youve received. Mentioning any awards or other forms of recognition you received at work also shows that your employer recognized your importance to the company. Use value-related keywords. Use active verbs and other keywords in your resume and cover letter that help to show how you added value while at your previous companies. Some words you might use include Achieved/nominated/wonCreatedDecreased/increasedDevelopedGeneratedImprovedLaunchedRevenue/profitsSavedUnder budget When and How to Mention Your Value Highlight Your Achievements in Your Resume In the work history section of your resume, dont simply list your duties for each previous job. Instead, include examples of how you added value to each company. One w ay to do that is to use bullet points to highlight your accomplishments in each role. You can highlight some of your most significant value-adding examples in your resume summary, if you have one. For example, an editor might write a resume summary that says, Freelance editor with 10 years experience revising articles, essays, and books. Edits an average of 200 pages per week for dozens of award-winning authors and journals. This resume summary quantifies the editors success in terms of her ability to handle a high volume of pages and a number of clients. It also highlights her experience with quality writing. Share a Story in Your titelbild Letter In your cover letter, highlight two or three skills or abilities that demonstrate how you are the right fit for the job. For each skill, mention a time you used it to achieve success for your company. For example, you could say that you are a teacher who has strong classroom management skills. You could specify you manage classrooms of up to 35 students and you have won three teaching awards for your effective classroom management. Tip By quantifying your success and emphasizing your awards, you will show employers that your previous organization valued you. During a Job Interview In your interview, you might get a specific question, such as Tell us how you have added value at your previous jobs. If you do, share examples of successes from the list you created before the interview. You can also mention how youve added value when answering other interview questions. For example, if you are pursuing a job as a hostess and the interviewer asks whether or not you can handle stress at work, you could mention the average number of people you seated on weeknights and weekends at your previous hostessing job. This will show the employer you can manage a busy restaurant environment. Examples of How to Show Youve Added Value Use these samples for inspiration when writing your resume and cover letter and when preparing for an interview. Sample Employment History Section of a Resume WORK HISTORYSenior Event Coordinator, ABC Events, Boston, MA 2017-PresentPlanned and executed over 125 events, including corporate retreats, fundraisers, and workshops for groups of up to 300 participants.Managed event budgets of up to $50,000, completing events under budget 100% of the time.Received an average of 4.81 out of 5 stars from clients.Wedding Planner Assistant Coordinator, Claire Smith Weddings, Hartford, CT 2015-2017Co-planned and co-executed over 25 weddings with parties of up to 250 people.Responsible for managing relationships with over 20 vendors across the greater New England area.Managed budgets of up to $100,000.Promoted from assistant to assistant coordinator due to my excellent budgeting and organizational skills. Expand? Sample Paragraph from a Cover Letter You state in the job description you want a bartender with extensive experience in a fast-paced environment. I am extremely comfortable and famil iar with working in large, busy restaurants. As a hostess at ABC Restaurant for three years, I sat an average of 300 tables per day. When I transitioned to runner and then bartender at XYZ Bar and Taproom, I served 200-400 customers on weekend nights. My supervisor once awarded me Employee of the Month because of my ability to handle the pressures of a busy work environment. Expand Sample Response to an Interview Question The following is an example of a response to the interview question, Why should we hire you? I have a lot of familiarity working in a startup environment such as yours. I enjoy the opportunity to be innovative and creative, which a startup provides. You said in the job listing you want an innovative thinker who can use creativity to increase efficiency. This is the kind of work I love to do. For example, in my previous position as director of operations, staff members were often late for meetings. I realized one solution was to create a more efficient scheduling system for meetings. I switched our office to a new scheduling system that reduced missed meetings and errors in room assignments by 20%. I also offered three training courses in the new system so that there was little user error, even in the first week of using the system. Expand

3 Reasons Youre Not Getting Hired
3 Reasons Youre Not Getting Hired3 Reasons Youre Not Getting HiredSending out lots ofrsums with no responses? Or perhaps youre getting interviews, but elend the job? While it may feel like youre doing everything in your power to land a new job, if yourehaving trouble closing the deal, its time for anotlageher look. There are probably obvious reasons why youre not getting the job, and they need to be taken into consideration 1. You dont have any connections. Connections are essential to getting a job, often allowing you to bypass writing arsum, cover letter and the application process altogether.Connections make the entire job search easier. But if youre not getting a job, take a look at who knows you and what you do. You may not have any helpful connections to get you in the door because you dont network, or because you just havent put yourself out there. Folks cant help you if they dont know what you need. If you dont use your connections, another candidate will be put at the front of the linea candidate who used their connections. To start building your connection network, start letting friends or family membersknowwhat type of job you want, and see if they know of anyone who may be able to help. If you dont feel your friend or family network is strong enough, start the networking process by going to an event or meetup in your desired industry. Chat up those around you, and make sure to grab business cards and follow up after. Invite your new contacts to coffee (on you), and start building those relationships. Youve probably heard this advice before, but have you done it?2. Youre bad at selling yourself. Your cover letter andrsumare dry and terrible. You dont sound like yourself at all. Or maybe those documents are far too short or too long. Lets face it Yourefloundering, and youre just plain bad at talking about yourself. But if youre bad at selling yourself, youll never make it into the pile of to interviewrsums. Selling yourself isnt a bad thing it mos tly just takes preparation. First, keep a document of accomplishments. Then when you create your cover letter andrsum, highlight those results, rather than list what you didday to day in past positions. Stayconfident in your tone, from paper to in person, and continue to describe the results you can bring to the position during your interview as well. 3. Youre not conversational. If you make it to the interview, but dont get the job, consider your interview style. Beyond discussing why youre perfect for the job and highlighting your skills and results in past positions, youll want to be conversational. Why? Employers want to like you. Likeable people are the best kinds of people to work with. So turn up the charm and enthusiasm. Show that not only are you fully competent, but youll be interested in your job and get along with your manager and colleagues. Dont be overeager, but make sure to express your passion and commitment. Part of being likable is listening attentively and respo nding appropriately. Ask questions, and be interested beyond what youve rehearsed in your interview prep. Remember, you are interviewing the employer as much as they are interviewing you. Relax, take a deep breath and just be your amazing, normal self. When youre not getting the job, its tough to stomach. But by taking a hard look at your job search process, you can ensure that you get further than ever before. By making changes in your network, your sales and your conversational skills, youll get past thersumstage, past the first and second interviews and into your very own corner office.Rebecca Healyis the founder ofKontrary, a different take on money and happiness that helps you take control of your work and life. Uriah Boyden
Uriah Boyden Uriah Boyden Uriah BoydenUriah Boyden turned around the way we harness the power of water. Literally. Boyden, consulting for Lowell, MAs waterpower system, reversed the waterwheel concept of rotation through water filling, creating turbines that rotated as the falling water was conducted into them, striking the metal veins that spiraled around a central shaft. As noted in the 102-inch Boyden Hydrauling Turbines report , the Boyden Turbine began from the Fourneyron Turbine but improved upon it with a conical approach passage for the incoming watersubmerged diffusers guide vanes and a diverting exit passage all played their part in its success. According to the book Structures of Chance in the Mechanical Age by Ross Thomson, Boyden used the turbine for Lowell mills with machines that had as high as a 700-hp rating. In the book Alternative Energy by Brian Black and Richard Flarend, the turbine was cited as a vital moment in the manipulation of a river for industrial capabilit ies. It states In this case, water was channeled out of the river at a certain point in a power canal. This canal led to a point from which the water would fall to a lower level. During its fall, it filled the buckets in a waterwheel, its weight driving the wheel aroundBy 1858, Lowell employed 56 Boyden turbines, each rated at 35 to 650 hp. In both the waterwheel and turbine systems, the power was transferred by wooden or metal gears and leather belts to the mills main power shaft or drive pulley.Much of Boydens work is linked with James Francis, chief engineer of the Locks and Canals Company, who, at times, seemed to be a rival. There was, however, no question Boyden aided Francis inventions. In the book Waterpower in Lowell Engineering and Industry in Nineteenth-Century America by Patrick M. Malone, Francis needed help in stopping the sometimes erratic way of his Prony brake. He did this with a hydraulic regulator and Robert Thurston, a professor of engineering, who corresponded w ith Francis, says Boyden deserved credit for the solution. However, it is noted by many that Francis ultimately outshined Boydens work, resulting in the mixed-flow reaction turbine, which is even used to this day.Boydens early work was related to the shipping and railroad industries, surveying for the Boston and Providence Railroad and later overseeing the construction of the Nashua and Lowell Railroad. But Boyden may have had an even earlier influence as Seth Boyden, a brother 15 years his senior, would make his own mark as an inventor in areas such as malleable leather. What is of little question is that both Boydens were a measurable influence in their industries for a strong part of the 19th century.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Boyden Turbine began from the Fourneyron Turbine but improved upon it with a conical approach passage for the incoming water.

8 easy ways to retain more of every book you read (without taking notes)
8 easy ways to retain mora of every book you read (without taking notes)8 easy ways to retain mora of every book you read (without taking notes)When asked whether reading was essential to his success, Microsoft Founder and Billionaire, Bill Gates, repliedYou dont really start getting old until you stop learning. Every book teaches me something new or helps me see things differentlyReading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career.1 - Bill GatesLike Bill Gates, we also know how important it is to read books, but we often struggle to retain what we read How often do you spend hours reading or listening to a book, only to forget the fruchtwein important ideas a few days later? When we fail to remember what we read, we waste valuable time and energy rereading the book- time that couldve been spent reading another valuable book.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfac tion, Neuroscience, and moreOver the past few years, Ive experimented with different ways to improve reading comprehension and remember what I read. Here are 8 of the best strategies Ive discovered on how to retain more of what you read, without taking notes.1. Share What You Learn to OthersOne of the best ways to retain what you read is to share ideas youve learned from books with friends, family and colleagues.Just like how humming a catchy song helps you remember the lyrics, sharing important ideas youve read to different people?- including specific examples of how the ideas apply to you- will help you retain what you read. However, if youd prefer to keep your thoughts to yourself, you can use a powerful accelerated learning strategy called The Feynman Technique, created by Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Richard Feynman. The Feynman Technique is simple simply grab a blank sheet of paper, write the title of the book at the top, and then write down the important ideas from the book as if you were explaining it to an eight-year-old child. If you can practice explaining the key ideas from a book in a simple way that a complete beginner can understand, youll improve your reading comprehension and remember everything you read.2. Make Connections to What You Already KnowIn the bookDamn Right Behind the Scenes with Berkshire Hathaway Billionaire Charlie Munger, Munger noted thatIf you get into the mental habit of relating what youre reading to the basic structure of the underlying ideas being demonstrated, you gradually accumulate some wisdom. This wisdom is the fundamental idea or first principles of what youre reading. For example, whilst reading the bookBlink The Power of Thinking Without Thinkingby Malcolm Gladwell, I realized that the key ideas reminded me of the concept of a highly focused mental state called Flow, which Id previously read through the work of psychologist, Mihly Cskszentmihlyi. As another example, whilst readingThe Paradox of Choice Why More is Le ss, I related the key concepts to scenarios where Id been overwhelmed by a vast number of food choices on a restaurant menu.By connecting new ideas to familiar concepts, you can retain more of what you read and improve your reading comprehension.Plus, youll uncover innovative solutions to familiar problems- because new insights tend to emerge at the intersection of ideas across different domains.Next time youre reading an important idea in a book, simply ask yourself this question What does this remind me of?3. Binge Read Similar TopicsAfter reading countless books on similar topics, Ive discovered that information and knowledge within different books are like branches of a tree.Although each branch may look different, they all emerge from the saatkorn trunk. In other words, the fundamental ideas across seemingly different books tend to be similar.Following my eureka moment, I devised a technique called Surrounding the 5.The concept is simple I pick the top five most important books on a particular topic and then like surround sound around a listener, I surround myself around the topic by reading each book back to front in theright environment. As an example, when I wished to dive into the topic of philosophy, I began reading the classic books by Aristotle, Plato, Kant, Nietzche, and Jean-Paul Sartre. This helped me to make connections between ideas and remember what I read.Plus, it saved me valuable time and energy that couldve have been wasted searching for the best books to read or reading badeanstalt books. When you read the fundamental books on a topic, you build a solid foundation or tree trunk to accumulate new ideas that reinforce your existing knowledge on the topic. This improves your reading comprehension and helps you retain more of what you read- because as King Solomon once said, there is nothing new under the sun.So whilst new books may appear to contain new information, they all borrow ideas from the same knowledge trunk.4. Read Books You Can Apply ImmediatelyOne of the best ways to improve your reading comprehension is to read books that are relevant to your current struggles. For example, if youre struggling to lose weight and stay in shape, you can read a book likeHow to Eat, Move and be Healthy, and apply the key concepts instantly. This way youll accelerate your learning, because all five senses will be immersed in engaging with the new information.Haven said that, not all books are written to be applied in everyday life. But when it can be, ask yourself this questionWhats the one thing Im going to apply after reading this book?By putting into practice what you read, you can retain what you read and bridge the gap between knowledge and wisdom.5. Keep Your Notes and Highlights OrganizedIf you decide to take extensive notes on a book, there are various tools you can use to ensure that you remember what you read.2I personally keep my notes organized inEvernote, because they are searchable and easy to access on my mobile phone a nd laptop.Prior to using Evernote, Id have my written notes scattered across various notebooks that went missing. This meant that Id have to rewrite my notes again- an enormous waste of time and energy.Another effective strategy is to highlight key ideas on theKindle Paperwhite and then export the notes to Evernote using their web clipper. If you choose to type or handwrite notes from a book, you can use areading standto keep the book still as you turn the pages (otherwise, the pages will close and youd have to keep reopening them, which can be exhausting).6. Listen Slowly For Learning and Fast For EntertainmentListening to audiobooks is a great way to digest information from a book during commutes and whilst completing mundane tasks. But its easy to get bored, lose track of what youre listening to and forget the most important ideas. One of the best ways to remember more information from audiobooks is to slow down the speed throughout learning portions of the book and increase the spe ed throughout entertainment portions.Let me explain. Most schlaues buch authors tend to fill up a significant portion of their books with stories, statistics and exercises, designed to keep the reader engaged and support key ideas. These fillers are entertaining but not essential. And since nearly 80% of the content within most non-fiction books tends to be filler, you can listen to the audiobook at 1.5-2x speed onAudible.3Then, when you reach portions of the book that contain important ideas, simply rewind and slow down the speed throughout this section. This way youll save valuable time skipping through the fillers and spend more time absorbing the key ideas in the book.Pro tipUse a pair ofwireless headphonesto listen to audiobooks hands-free while exercising, commuting and completing mundane tasks.7. Only Read Good Books You Enjoy (Twice)Eating is like reading. The more junk food you eat, the worse your health and body shape.Likewise, the more bad books you read, the worse your knowle dge base will be, and the harder it will be to remember what you read.Too often, we start reading a new book because its highly recommended and popular. But that doesnt mean its a good book. And more times than not, we beat ourselves up for failing to finish reading an average book.A better approach is this dont bother reading any book that isnt good.In the book,How to Read a Book The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading, Mortimer J. Adler explains that, a good book can teach you about the world and about yourself. You learn more than how to read better you also learn more about life. You become wiser. After reading a fair share of bad books that left a bitter taste in my mouth, I devised an effective 3-step strategy to help me sift the best from the average booksStep 1Quickly read the table of contents to get the gistof the book, then skim over the first few paragraphs of the opening chapter and the last few paragraphs of the concluding chapter. Only proceed to the next step if the b ook appears to be valuable.Step 2Skim through the first few paragraphs and the last few paragraphs within specific chapters that are of interest to you. Only proceed to the next step if the book still seems useful to you.Step 3Open the book anywhere in the middle and read one full chapter. If youre still hooked, its probably a good book to read back to front. As a general rule of thumb, great books tend to be thought-provoking and leave you feeling slightly exhausted after reading. They dont just make you more knowledgeable, but also wiser. If the book youre reviewing passes through all three steps and meets these criteria, then its probably worth your time reading the entire book. But were not done.Whilst bad books should only be tasted and good books devoured, great books should be chewed and digested thoroughly. In other words, great books should be read more than once. And in the words of the playwright, Oscar Wilde, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.48. Read Before BedAstudypublished inPsychological Science- which explored strategies for improving memory- discovered that sleeping in-between learning sessions not only reduced the amount of practice needed by half, but also increased long-term retention of information.5During the experiment, the researchers split 60 French-speaking participants into three different groups a control group, sleep group and no sleep group. Each of them were assigned with the task of learning and remembering French translations of a list of 16 Swahili words. The Control group studied the words in the evening and took the memory test 12 hours after sleeping. The Sleep group also studied the words in the evening and took the memory test 12 hours after sleeping. However, they studied the words a second time. Finally, the No Sleep group studied the words in the morning and took the memory test 12 hours later without sleeping in-between study sessions. Then they studied the words a s econd time.Afterwards, the researchers conducted follow-up memory tests one week and then six months later. The results The Sleep group and the Control group both remembered the words better than the No Sleep group. Most surprisingly, the Sleep group remembered more words than both the Control and No Sleep group after 6 months of the memory test. The implication of this study is that sleeping in-between learning sessions can significantly boost memory and reading comprehension. The best way to put this into practice is to read or listen to your book just before you go to bed, andget a good nights sleep. To ensure that reading in bed doesnt disrupt your sleep, you can use aclip-on warm book light, which will make reading easy on the eyes- and avoid the effects of blue light from lamps and bulbs that cause sleep deprivation.TakeawayBooks are much more than a source of entertainment. They are an investment towards your future self a gateway to connect with and gain knowledge from the wisest people who are, and were once alive. But more times than not we often treat books in a fleeting manner- reading in a hurry whilst multitasking and tossing them aside afterward. The uncomfortable truth is this reading is only half the battle. The other half is reflecting on what youve read. The best ways to retain what you read and improve reading comprehension, embrace the idea that an equal portion of time spent reading a book, should also be spent thinking and reflecting upon the important ideas youve read. But its time consuming trying to figure out which books are worth reading and equally challenging to find time to read good books.Thats why Ive put together a list of thebest audiobooks ofall-time,which you can listen to during your road trips and commute.Ultimately, as Philosopher, John Locke, once saidReading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge it is thinking that makes what we read ours.6.FOOTNOTESExcerpt from Bill Gatesinterview.Even though this article focuses on how to retain what you read without taking notes, note-taking is a powerful strategy to help you remember what you read and improve reading comprehension. One of the best ways I condense my book notes in a memorable way is to write a short two paragraph summary of what Ive read followed by three key ideas from the book. The 80% figure is an average estimation based on my experience of reading many non-fiction books.Source Essays by Oscar Wilde.Mazza, Stphanie Gerbier, Emilie Gustin, M.-P Kasikci, Zumrut Koenig, Olivier C Toppino, Thomas Magnin, Michel. Military Funeral Honors and Customs
Military Funeral Honors and CustomsMilitary Funeral Honors and CustomsAs with the military itself, our armed forces final farewell to comrades is steeped in tradition and ceremony. Prominent in a military funeral is the flag-draped casket. The blue field of the flag is placed at the head of the casket, over the left shoulder of the deceased. The custom began in the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries when a flag was used to titel the dead as they were taken from the battlefield on a caisson. During a military funeral, the horses that pull the caisson which bears the body of the veteran are all saddled, but the horses on the left have riders, while the horses on the right do not. This custom evolved from the days when horse-drawn caissons were the primary means of moving artillery ammunition and cannon, and the riderless horses carried provisions. The single riderless horse that follows the caisson with boots reversed in the stirrups is called the caparisoned hor se in reference to its ornamental coverings, which have a detailed protocol all to themselves. By tradition in military funeral honors, a caparisoned horse follows the casket of an Army or Marine Corps officer who was a colonel or above, or the casket of a president, by virtue of having been the nations military commander in chief. Abraham Lincoln, who was killed in 1865, was the first U.S. president to be honored with a caparisoned horse at his funeral. The 21-Gun Salute Graveside military honors include the firing of three volleys each by seven service members. This commonly is confused with an entirely separate honor, the 21-gun salute. But the number of individual gun firings in both honors evolved the same way. The three volleys came from an old battlefield custom. The two warring sides would cease hostilities to clear their dead from the battlefield, and the firing of three volleys meant that the dead had been properly cared for and the side was ready to resume the battle. The 21-gun salute traces its roots to the Anglo-Saxon empire, when seven guns constituted a recognized naval salute, as fruchtwein naval vessels had seven guns. Because gunpowder in those days could be more easily stored on land than at sea, guns on land could fire three rounds for every one that could be fired by a ship at sea. Later, as gunpowder and storage methods improved, salutes at sea also began using 21 guns. The U.S.at first used one round for each state, attaining the 21-gun salute by 1818. The nation reduced its salute to 21 guns in 1841, and formally adopted the 21-gun salute at the suggestion of the British in 1875. Service for Deceased President A U.S. presidential death also involves other ceremonial gun salutes and military traditions. On the day after the death of the president, a former president or president-elect,the commanders of Army installations traditionally order that one gun is fired every half hour, beginning at reveille and ending at a retreat. On the day of burial, a 21-minute gun salute traditionally is fired starting at noon at all military installations with the necessary personnel and material. Also on the day of burial, those installations will fire a 50-gun salute - one round for each state - at five- second intervals immediately following lowering of the flag. The playing of Ruffles and Flourishes announces the arrival of a flag officer or other dignitary of honor. Drums play the ruffles, and bugles play the flourishes one flourish for each star of the flag officers rank or as appropriate for the honorees position or title. Four flourishes are the highest honor. When played for a president, Ruffles and Flourishes is followed by Hail to the Chief. The Playing of Taps The bugle call Taps originated in the Civil War with the Army of the Potomac. Union Army Brig. Gen. Daniel Butterfield didnt like the bugle call that signaled soldiers in the camp to put out the lights and go to sleep, and worked out the melody of Tap s with his brigade bugler, Pvt. Oliver Wilcox Norton. The call later came into another use as a figurative call to the sleep of death for soldiers. Another military honor dates back only to the 20th century. The missing-man formation usually is a four-aircraft formation with the No. 3 aircraft either missing or performing a pull-up maneuver and leaving the formation to signify a lost comrade in arms. While this can change slightly from serviceto service and is based on preferences of family members, the voreingestellt sequence of events for a military funeral atArlington National Cemeteryis usually as follows The caisson or hearse arrives at the grave site, everyone presents arms. The casket team secures the casket, and the chaplain leads the way to the gravesite. The casket team sets down the casket and secures the flag. The flag is stretched out and level and centered over the casket. After the chaplain performs the service, and before the benediction, the gun salute is fired (whe n appropriate). The officer in chargepresents arms to initiate the rifle volley, then the bugler plays Taps. The flag is folded and presented to the next of kin. The only person remaining at the grave is one soldier, the vigil. His mission is to watch over the body until it is interred into the ground. How to (Tastefully) Recruit From Your Competitors - Spark Hire
How to (Tastefully) Recruit From Your Competitors - Spark HireWhen youre a smaller company in an industry thats full of giants, it may feel nearly impossible to land yourself top talent. However, with some careful strategizing and self-reflection, it is possible to attract the best in the business. In fact, you may even find that youre able to convert competitors top performers, thus bringing them on board your team. If you have your eye on a standout employee at another company, here are some ways to recruit them to join your force in a tasteful wayDont trash the other guysNothing discredits your company faster than trash talking the persons current employer. Even if what youre saying is true, it makes you seem unprofessional and catty. Instead of talking smack about your competitors, keep the conversation positive and focused on what you have to offer on your own.Dont apologize for the size of the companySome professionals feel the need to apologize for the smaller size of their co mpany as they try to recruit. In reality, what you view as a negative may actually be a huge plus for a person who currently works for a huge firm. Bigger is not necessarily better, and in fact many people are anxious to leave a large corporation. Never apologize for the businesss smaller size, as this may actually end up being a huge selling point.Focus on the positive aspects of your businessThough you may not have as much glitz and glam as the other guys, in order to illustrate why this person wants to work for your business, youll need to know how to show thepositive aspects of your company. Whether its your flexible work schedule, generous time off, or room for growth, when you highlight these factors it becomes immediately clear why this individual would want to join your team.Get the positiv outYou may have professionals who are just dying to work for you, but assume youre not hiring. In order to recruit top talent, you need to let these people know that youre looking. To do this, make mention of it on your website, and take care to post information about the company culture, successes, and other positive aspects of working for you. Youll also want to create a strong presence on social media, and may want to consider sponsoring lectures or networking events for industry professionals. If you are going to have other people partake in your recruiting efforts, make sure that they are qualified to represent the company well. If you pick someone who is burnt out, they may not do the business justice and may hinder your recruiting efforts as a result. How have you successfully recruited top talent from a competitor in the past?
