I do think people in general spend less time job searching than they should, but the only way such a number could be that low is because it's an average of people who are spending hours job searching every day, and people who are spending no time job searching every day. So what about you: how much time do you spend job searching every day?eval If you liked this article, you'll enjoy [POLL RESULTS AND ANALYSIS] If You’re Looking For A Job, Did You….

Trusted Personal Brand One Conversation at a Time - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Trusted Personal Brand One Conversation at a Time - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The final level of communication for those willing to build a strong personal brand must master is Level 3 Communication, or private, 1:1 communication. This level is what separates the poor or mediocre leaders from the truly outstanding leaders. To master Level 3 Communication strong Level 1 Communication skills are a pre-requisite, as they will allow you to do and say the things you need to at level three. In my coaching practice I find this to be a big roadblock in career development and in a leader’s ability to gain the trust and respect of his or her team members. The biggest challenge my clients tell me in being effective at level three is being able to frame the conversations in a way that is direct but also respectful enough to build trust and maintain a solid respectful relationship. Many struggle with getting that balance “just right.” Like Goldilocks experience with the options she found at the home of the three bears, some are too direct while others are not direct enough.   Others are too respectful, while some are not respectful enough. Another component of getting Level 3 Communication “just right” involves engaging in these private, 1:1, direct conversations in the proper timing. Many people wait too long to have the conversation to address issues that need to be dealt with, and this also damages the relationship. On the other end of the spectrum some hold that 1:1 communication too promptly and the timing is also inappropriate because it comes in the wrong setting, other people may be around or it’s a reaction in the moment without proper forethought. The best leaders master Level 3 Communication by delivering it with three key traits. Their private, 1:1 communication occurs promptly, directly respectfully. Most leaders have default to just two of these three and tend to have challenges with the third in the triad. As you might imagine, this causes a problem with their personal brand as people who have interacted with them in this manner lose their trust and respect. In this model there are four options: Prompt/Respectful: This is missing “direct” so it’s too soft. It’s beating around the bush, is low in specificity and causes ‘mind reading.’ Prompt/Direct: This is often delivered with inappropriate tone and body language, delivered in an inappropriate setting or location and lacks respect for the individual. Often is an immediate reaction in the moment. Direct/Respectful: This is not immediate enough and creates resentments because of the time delay between the behavior and the time it is addressed directly with the person. This communication style erodes the trust in the relationship. Prompt/Direct/Respectful: This is the ideal way to communicate; it builds trust and gets results! Which of these four manifestations of Level 3 Communication is your tendency. If it’s one of the top three, get some coaching to add the third so you can become a more effective communicator and build a strong personal brand every time you have to communicate one-on-one with another. Advice I Wish I Had Before Transitioning into Post-Grad Life

Advice I Wish I Had Before Transitioning into Post-Grad Life In my networking interviews, I love asking the question, What do you wish you would have known as a young professional woman just starting out in her career?  Today, Rachel Hyun Kim, a writer for Resource Nation, is going to answer that question for us. Resource Nation is an online resource that gives advice such as  lead generation  to small businesses and entrepreneurs. Rachel has written on a variety of topics, ranging from  background checks  to  payroll processing.   Post-Grad Life Like so many others, I have recently gone through the shift from college to post-grad life. For me, the transition was relatively smooth, though the path was not without its twists and turns. I definitely made my share of mistakes in my college years, both personal and career-related. The following pieces of advice are ones I wish I had been given, to ease the transition into post-grad life: Explore Different Options I thought I was going straight into law school after graduation, and spend the majority of my college years with this idea. But spending actual time and thought on the prospect made me quickly consider different options. While I had my senior year to explore different options, I wish someone told me to do it sooner. College is the best time to test different fields and career paths and try to figure out what you really want in life. Take advantage of this opportunity by exploring as much as you can. Network, Network, Network During my college years, I was too shy to talk to my professors, intimidated by their apparent all-knowing wisdom. I’d make excuses, telling myself that I had nothing to say, or that I needed to learn more about the material before going to office hours. Looking back on it now, I wish could go back in time and shake my college self. Beyond professors, it is important to network as much as you can, with peers, college alumni, and others. More often than not, you’ll have to rely on this valuable network of contacts in order to increase the chances of getting a job. Settle In In college, students are constantly subjected to change from their schedule of classes and an endless number of parties. But once you graduate, life slows down and takes a familiar pattern. It was a bit difficult to get used to the idea of a regular schedule; waking up, going to work, and spending free time at home. No longer am I able to stay up late at night, but have to sleep at a reasonable hour, in order to make it to work. But finding and creating a new schedule can help you easily transition into your new lifestyle. Don’t Be Afraid to Move Back Home When graduating from college, I didn’t have many well-defined goals or a particular plan for my life. But there was one goal that I had for certain: I didn’t want to move back home. There were several times in my short post-grad life where I came close to breaking this goal. However, I wish I could tell myself that this is an unrealistic goal; if you don’t have a job and a steady stream of income, then moving back home is a reasonable option. Be Financially Realistic We’ve all heard horror stories of college grads, who are burdened with massive amounts of debt and student loans. Regardless of whether or not you fall under this category, it’s important to fully understand the boundaries of your finances. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to save and scrounge for every penny; instead, it’s more about becoming financially responsible. No one is going to tell you how to manage your accounts; you’ll need to figure that out on your own. What do you wish you would have known about the post-grad life before graduating college?

LeBron James The Man with the Billion Dollar Personal Branding Plan - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

LeBron James â€" The Man with the Billion Dollar Personal Branding Plan - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I dont know if you had the chance to see the 60 Minutes piece on LeBron James last week? I did and I was extremely impressed with what I heard. I love sports and I love business. And while the creation of sports icons is not new, taking on the role of Chief Brand Manager for ones own brand is something LeBron James seems to be doing with ease. This is a billion dollar powerhouse in the making and by his own design. Man on a mission He is 24 years old and a man on a mission: He plans to be the first billion dollar sports brand. The operative word here is not billion dollar (although thats very impressive.). The operative word is PLAN. This man has a plan to become the first billion dollar sports brand. And my bet is that hell do it. If you assume LeBron James is one of the richest celebrities in the world, youre correct. Even before LeBron played his first NBA game, Nike inked him to a ninety million dollar contract. And way back, at the tender(and often naïve) age of 19, LeBron was reportedly quoted saying that he wanted to be the first billionaire athlete in the entire world and become a global icon. Fast forward to April, 2009, and most would agree that LeBron is already a global icon and is well on his way to becoming the first billionaire athlete. After all, here’s a man who in 2007 single handedly led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first sports championship game  in years! In a class of his own Michael Jordan had a 15- to 20-year run with Nike and developed a huge business that is probably worth $500 [million] to $600 million, said Lynn Merritt, senior director of basketball sports marketing at Nike, and the guy who tracked LeBron from his earliest years in high school in an Ad Age report. The state that LeBron comes in with now, with the internet and all kinds of technological advancements that werent around when Michael was at his peak, well, LeBron could be the first billion-dollar athlete in all aspects. Learn from LeBron Anyone interested in the how or why of personal branding should study this story with great interest. Here are just a few elements of his personal branding story you might be able to incorporate to your plans: 1. Self-Awareness. This is a critical success factor to all personal branding youve got to know who you are and where youre going. Just watching the video from 60 Minutes is enough to convince most people that this is a man who is totally self aware. Are you self-aware? Do you have a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses? Does your personal brand statement reflect that? 2. Plan the Work and Work the Plan. LeBron has seen himself in the drivers seat both on the bball court and off. According to interviews, hes had a plan since before high school. Now hes working that plan. Whats your plan? Have you written out your personal branding goals for the next 6 months, 1 year, 5 years? 3. Be Bold. LeBron stunned the advertising world when he announced that his three friends: Maverick Carter, Randy Mims and Rich Paul would run his marketing operations. His express goal? Driving the business of LeBron James into the stratosphere, where James would one day become sports first billion dollar athlete. What bold move could you make in the next few weeks that would make an unforgettable statement to those youre seeking to reach? Think it through, write it out, and take action. Results happen for those who make them happen.
